About the Organizers

Asia Source 3 was jointly organized by UNDP's International Open Source Network (UNDP-IOSN) through its ASEAN+3 Centre of Excellence (Philippines) and InWEnt - Capacity Building International (Germany) together with the Tactical Technology Collective (Netherlands), Aspiration (USA) and The Centre for Internet and Society (India). Funders include the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development of Germany (BMZ), the ASEAN Foundation and the Open Society Institute.

UNDP's International Open Source Network (UNDP-IOSN) ASEAN+3

The International Open Source Network (IOSN) promotes the adoption of free/open source software, open standards, and open content for sustainable human development in the Asia-Pacific region.

InWEnt - Capacity Building International

Inwent - Capacity Building International of Germany, is a non-profit organisation with worldwide operations dedicated to human resource development, advanced training, and dialogue. Inwent is commissioned by the German Federal Government, the German business sector, and the German Länder. See http://www.inwent.org/

Within its it@inwent programmes, InWEnt strengthens IT sectors in Africa and Asia, fosters key innovations in Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) for economic development such as Free and Open Source Software (FOSS), and supports its partners to use ICTs as enabling tools for poverty reduction. Tactical Technology Collective

Tactical Tech is an international NGO helping human rights advocates use information, communications and digital technologies to maximise the impact of their advocacy work. We provide advocates with guides, tools, training and consultancy to help them develop the skills and tactics they need to increase the impact of their campaigning.

Aspiration

Aspiration’s mission is to connect nonprofit organizations with software solutions that help them better carry out their work. We want nonprofit organizations to be able to find and use the best software available, so that they maximize their effectiveness and impact and, in turn, change the world.

Cen­tre for In­ter­net and So­ci­ety

The Centre for Internet and Society will critically engage with concerns of digital pluralism, public accountability and pedagogic practices, in the field of Internet and Society, with particular emphasis on South-South dialogues and exchange. Through multidisciplinary research, intervention, and collaboration, we seek to explore, understand, and affect the shape and form of the internet, and its relationship with the political, cultural, and social milieu of our times.

 

FUNDERS


Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development

The Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development is a ministry in Germany. Its main office is in Bonn with a second major office in Berlin. Founded in 1961, the Ministry works to encourage economic development within Germany and in other countries through international cooperation and partnerships. It cooperates with international organizations involved in development including the International Monetary Fund, World Bank, and the United Nations.

ASEAN Foundation

In recognition of the fundamental importance of improving the livelihoods and well-being of the peoples of Southeast Asia, and the need to promote ASEAN awareness as well as people-to-people contact through scholarships, fellowships and other exchanges, the Leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) agreed to establish the ASEAN Foundation on 15 December 1997 in Kuala Lumpur during the Association’s 30th Anniversary Commemorative Summit. The ultimate aim was to help bring about shared prosperity and a sustainable future to all ASEAN countries which comprises of Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Viet Nam.

Open Society Institue

The Open Society Institute works to build vibrant and tolerant democracies whose governments are accountable to their citizens. To achieve its mission, OSI seeks to shape public policies that assure greater fairness in political, legal, and economic systems and safeguard fundamental rights. On a local level, OSI implements a range of initiatives to advance justice, education, public health, and independent media. At the same time, OSI builds alliances across borders and continents on issues such as corruption and freedom of information. OSI places a high priority on protecting and improving the lives of people in marginalized communities.

The Open Society Institute’s initiatives address specific issue areas on a regional or network-wide basis around the world. Most of the initiatives are administered by OSI offices in New York, London, or Budapest and are implemented in cooperation with Soros foundations in various countries and regions.  OSI initiatives cover a range of activities aimed at building free and open societies, including grantmaking to strengthen civil society; economic reform; education at all levels; human rights; legal reform and public administration; media and communications; public health; and arts and culture.

Mozilla Foundation

The Mozilla Foundation is a non-profit organization that exists to support and provide leadership for the open source Mozilla project. The organization sets the policies that govern development, operate key infrastructure and control trademarks and other intellectual property. It owns two taxable for-profit subsidiaries: the Mozilla Corporation, which employs several Mozilla developers and coordinates releases of the Mozilla Firefox web browser, and Mozilla Messaging, Inc., which primarily develops the Mozilla Thunderbird email client. The Mozilla Foundation is based in the Silicon Valley city of Mountain View, California, USA.
